Mr Xu Weiping, Chairman of leading Chinese enterprise ABP, today announced that the company will establish its global headquarters in London. The HQ will have the capacity to manage and operate more than £20 billion worth of projects and assets around the world. The Mayor of London welcomed the move, which follows a £1bn deal between the developer and City Hall to transform east London’s Royal Albert Dock site into the capital’s next business district creating 20,000 new jobs for the area.
ABP has an enviable track record for developing enterprise districts, which bring together clusters of companies on a massive scale.
The newly established HQ will have 100 staff, including strategy, finance, human resources, sales and marketing, communications and research and development. The move is expected to act as a further catalyst for Chinese investment into the UK which totalled £8bn last year, and provide more jobs for London on top of the 20,000 jobs that will be created by the development of Royal Albert Docks.
ABP has chosen to locate its new global headquarters in London and will announce shortly exactly where it will be situated. The location of the global headquarters in London will help position ABP for future global expansion. London is seen as the gateway to Europe and the ideal location for the company to reach new property markets.
Mr Xu made the announcement at a London-Asia business forum at City Hall attended by the Mayor of London and a range of businesses from Asia including a 50 strong business delegation from China.
Making the announcement about the creation of the new global HQ to leading businesses from the UK, Asia and China, Chairman of ABP Mr Xu said:
“This is a hugely significant move for ABP as we grow the company globally. London is one of the world’s truly global cities and it was a proud moment when we announced ABP had acquired the Royal Albert Dock. As we look towards expanding worldwide London is the natural choice to base ABP’s global headquarters. We considered a number of options but chose London because it has fantastic international connections, a reputation for entrepreneurialism and we were encouraged by London’s spectacular organisation and hosting of the 2012 Olympic Games. London is ideally placed to do global business across time zones, is business friendly in terms of finance, information and services and has a readily available and highly skilled workforce. Many of those in London have strong family connections to countries across the world and have an international outlook.”
“London presents many fantastic opportunities and I believe this is just the beginning of an exciting period of investment and regeneration in the area. I hope other foreign businesses will follow our lead and invest in this great city. We have many leading businesses from Asia here today and I will introduce the Mayor to many more when we welcome him to Beijing later next month.”
“As shown by our track record in China and now London, ABP’s global expansion will be rapid - the company is cutting edge, innovative and forward thinking. While London will be our global HQ, our Beijing office will become the centre for our ABP Asia-Pacific operations.”
Also speaking at the London-Asia business forum, Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said:
“It’s fantastic to see ABP voting with their feet and choosing to bring their global headquarters to London. A fantastic place to live and work, in the right time-zone to trade between east and west, with a highly skilled workforce and a concentration of first class business expertise, London has an enormous amount to offer businesses and brands from all over the world.
“I wish ABP every success in establishing their new international home here and as they progress with the exciting transformation of the capital’s Royal Docks, into London’s third business district, worth thousands of jobs and billions of pounds of investment for the UK economy.”
